Popmog – Gaming Leader

The gaming industry is all about variety. And for some, the possibility to play games for free.

Also, the world of gaming would not be possible without the amazing talent of developers. Popmog is giving out a helping  hand by being the ultimate gaming platform, where free games are available not only from reputable companies like INNOGames, Gameforce, Outspark or Starforge, but also from newcomers.

Founded by Alexander Piutti in 2009, Popmog has seen incredible growth over the last years, due in part from the funding received in 2009 from Target Partners, High-Tech Gründerfonds and Estag Capital, which enabled Popmog to expand to the US and UK market.

That, and the large variety of games available on the website (more than 700, as they claim) may be the key to success.

Zalando – E-commerce Winner

Specialized at first in shoe retailing, Zalando has soon become a great success E-commerce Company, part of the famous accelerator Rocket Internet, with the number of customers constantly rising, they are now a full fashion retail website, with amazing products and often great discounts,  with more than 5,000 employees and €1.8 billion in turnover.

Founded by Robert Gentz and David Schneider, the Startup has received great feedback not only from customers, but also investors, who have considered it worthy of their attention and money:

2009  – Alexander Samwer (Rocket Internet) 50.000 €  + a couple of  flight tickets some months before (yes it’s part of the story)  :)

2010-08-31 – Series A: Undisclosed amount from Tengelmann E-Commerce Beteiligungs and HV Holtzbrinck Ventures

2012-02-06 – Venture: Undisclosed amount from DST Global

2012-08-16 – Venture: Undisclosed amount from J.P. Morgan and Quadrant Capital Advisors

2012-10-02 – Debt Financing: $52.63M from Commerzbank and KfW Bankengruppe

2013/11 – Private Equity: $190.8M from Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and TH Lee Putnam Ventures

Even if previously involved in a scandal related to workplace conditions, Zalando continues its expansion in the global market with great success. Good fortune from us, and may they rise even more, or at least keep their position in our periodic Best Biggest Startups Reports!

Groupon.de (ex Citydeal or MyCitydeal in UK,NL)

Citydeal was founded in 2009, as a clone of Groupon, by Daniel P. Glasner and Philipp Magin, sold to Goupon the next year (2010), the deal-of-the-day website has seen its ups and down, but continues to be a market leader, with 1,106,618 monthly estimated unique visitors.
