Reverb – The Best Marketplace for Musicians

Today’s No.1 in RocketCompanies Chicago Fastest Growing Startups  is Reverb.com

Founded in January 2012, by David Kalt, Reverb has soon transformed into the largest marketplace for handmade, used or vintage music instruments in the US. Kalt, also the owner of the Chicago Music Exchange (believed to be the world’s largest vintage guitar dealer), has started a challenge to

“Make buying and selling used gear a fun, easy and painless experience.”

The total funding received by Reverb reaches $2.8M, money that came from Seed Funding by David Kalt, in June 18, 2013 -$500K and from Series A funding on November 19, 2013, from David Kalt, Rick Nielsen, Eric Lefkovsky, Eric Ries and David Lowery.

The entire concept behind Reverb was to create not just another online music store or trading platform, but a welcoming environment for musicians from all backgrounds and knowledge levels. They rely on strong communication, helping everyone get the musical instrument or gear they need but which also fits their needs.

From a financial point of view, their 3.5% of each sale has made not only individuals use the platform, but also more than 800 MI retailers. This creates great competition for large selling platforms like Amazon or Ebay, which keep 12% of each sale.

Kalt’s predictions about the financial future of Reverb are, apparently, coming true. $10 million in transactions for 2014, $40M for 2015 and reaching more than $100M in the years to follow, as their current monthly growth places them at the top of our 20 Chicago Fastest Growing Startups report, with a value of 139%.
