Auburn Hills, Mich. – Feb. 03, 2009 – Rock Financial and Pistons legend Rick Mahorn present the fourth annual NBA Detroit Pistons and WNBA Detroit Shock Black History Month Event at the Henry Ford Museum on Thursday, Feb. 5 starting at 10 a.m.

Three Detroit area schools; Henry Ford High Academy, Kettering High School and Ferguson Academy selected their two best students to compete to win scholarships courtesy of Rock Financial, Fathead.com, Detroit Free Press Gift of Reading and the Pistons-Palace Foundation. Students will perform a three-minute interpretation on the importance of knowing your black history in the art form of their choice.

Participants will win one of six scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $500, each winner also receives a Pistons Fathead wall graphic and four tickets to the Feb. 19, 2009 Pistons vs. San Antonio game at The Palace. Students across Michigan can apply for a $1,000 scholarship online at www.pistons.com

Each school is also receiving five laptop computers courtesy of IBM. The students are encouraged to submit their historical memories and stories to the Smithsonian Institute’s virtual museum called National Museum of African-American History and Culture, which enables viewers to share stories on African-American history.

“In a historical year such as this, it becomes more important to know your history and know where you came from,” said Rick Mahorn, Assistant Coach of the WNBA World Champion Shock. “I am thrilled to be apart of this program and to help award scholarships to so many young people to assist in furthering their education.”

Joining Mahorn and Rock Financial President & Chief Operating Officer Patrick McInnis as event panelists are several prominent community members, including: Shock Captain Cheryl Ford, Fathead representative Brian Stevenson, Rhonda Walker from WDIV Channel 4 and special guest Dr. Darrius, popular radio personality from WJLB. Panelists will speak to students about the importance of knowing their history and share their own success stories. After, the students will perform their stories on influential African-Americans. Concluding the event all students are invited to tour the exhibits.

“This is the fourth year I’ve participated in this event and each year I am inspired by the presentation these students have done,” said Patrick McInnis, President of Rock Financial and Quicken Loans. “It’s an honor to be involved again and to help celebrate black history during this historic year.”

This event is in conjunction with the Pistons, Detroit Free Press Gift of Reading and IBM half million-dollar giveback “Read to Achieve Tour,” which revisits all 20 previously renovated Reading and Learning Centers renovated to date. Ferguson Academy and Kettering High School were both renovated in 2006 where everything from paint, carpet, furniture, technology and graphics were donated to improve their facilities.
